Shopping for new PC parts - help me choose

Post by Seahorse »

There does not seem to be a huge number of reviews of the new AMD 64s and virtually none give direction on whether to go Intel or AMD. Lemme know your thoughs... :?:

I already know Ze Baron's answer...

tbh, I'd leave 64 bit for a while... Noone really seems to have any idea what to do with it, and it'll be a while before any software that actually really uses it comes out. If you go AMD, get an x86...

P4EE? if u can afford it. i understand they are around $950 in shipments of 1000 units atm.

I would (atm) recommend either a AMD64 laptop from VoodooPC.com, alienware or PackardBell (NEC) when they come out, or just the latest 3200+ AthlonXP depending on how much u have to spend.
ahhh, Linux. The cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems....

you could just use linux ;)

I wouldn't say 'Money is no object', but take OCUK for example:

AMD64 = £340
P43.06C (800fsb) = £205

I can afford both. Do I want to pay the price premium for negible performance difference - as far as I can tell. As for the EE, it's even harder to find than the 64...

Availability makes mean lean towards the pentium, though a 64bit PC and maybe WinXP64 in the new year is tempting... :?:

Don't forget that Hyper-Threading Technology should be a very real factor in your decisoin making process. I reckon you ought to get a 800mhz FSB Intel Pentium 4 processor like the 3GHz rather that the 3.06GHz (which is 533).

AMD 64s have Hyperthreading, the possible release of a faster one & FX variant before Xmas should drive the price down too...

Hi,

No, AMD processors do not have Intel's Hyper-Threading Technology.

Only Intel Xeon and Pentium 4 processors have HT Technology.

And Pentium 4's have just had a price cut. Down 35% in some cases (as in the 3.2GHz version).

I'm thinking of buying a Dell Centrino based laptop, does anyone have an opinion about the subject?

all in all dell laptops are the dogs bollocks. the only other laptop which is as customisable as a dell is an alienware, and dell is the cheaper alternative :)

i've got a hp nx7000. i've seen the recent dells and think them to be overpriced (due to not many resellers), i used to own a insprion as many of you on here know and i've also supported many lattitudes (to which i've got about 3 in bits in my drawers atm.) having also spent much time using dell support i find them to be useless.. it's only their poweredges, high end lcd screens (which are rebranded) and cheap optiplex's that save them.

mind you.. they're no where near as bad as Fujitsu's.
