New server case..

Post by mid_gen »

Can anyone reccomend a good server case?

Reason has just had it's 5th HDD installed, and it really has run out of space (it's a cheap nasty unbranded ATX jobby). I really don't like 3 7200rpm drives running 24/7 all sandwiched together =/

Don't wanna spend too much, but obviously I'd like plenty of room for HDDs (5 1/4" drive bays will do)

Chieftech Scorpio TA-10WD White Full Tower (CA-005-CT)
Chieftech have quickly earned themselves a reputation for quality and innovation - as soon as we saw this case we could see why. The entire case is built to the very highest standards using high quality materials to create an incredibly strong case that looks as good as many more expensive case - this is certainly a heavyweight.

Featuring :
» 5.25" drive bay door - vented for cooling
» Lockable side door with quick release catch
» 3.5" bays featuring quick release catch for easy manipulation
» 5 x 80mm (3 at front, 2 behind CPU) fan holes with easy to fit fan brackets
» heavy duty 340W Antec PSU - approved by AMD and Intel
» Drive bay sliders conveniently stored at base of case
» Easy to remove drive bay covers
» 6 x 5.25" bays
» 8 x 3.5" bays (2 visible)
» keylock on front panel

For a closer look see inside the case.

PSU Output :
+5v = 30A +12V = 15A
+3.3V = 28A -5V = 0.5A
-12V = 1A + 5VSB = 2A
With 6 large connectors and 2 small

Full Specification

Price: £92.00 (£108.10 Including VAT at 17.5%)

We have one of those cases in labs and it's pretty good. Quality build and enough space to shake your 5 HDDs at..........As much as it pains me to say I agree with biggles.

It's the full tower version of the case I've got (purple Chieftec Dragon). I know they're really well built, all the slide-in drives are nice.

These babies ain't small though....I shall mull over it for a while..

Server Case...

Post by wilik »

Hi peeps,

rib told me you're looking for a case mid_gen.... You may remember me as the bloke from previous SG's who had the half terrabyte DivX server that everyone was so interested in... :)

After filling up a baby atx HP Brio 410 with seven hard disks + 1 CD in a home made bodge effort that included a lot drilling, bending, mounting and cutting of the case, i finally got to the stage where i couldn't atucally physically fit any more hard disks in the case no matter how hard i tried. So, i decided to go from one extreme to the other, Baby atx to "oh, my f***in' god!! Look at the size of that!!" size case.

I started by looking at rack mount stuff as this was all i could find with lots of 3.5" drive bays. i found this VERY nice 4U jobbie that had capacity for 16 IDE HDD's that was perfect until i asked how much....
http://www.tmc-uk.com/Products/enclosur ... /RMC4D.htm
this one was best part of a grand!!!!

After about 2 months of searching i eventually found the case i now have...
http://www.pcicase.co.uk/pccases.ihtml?pid=44&step=4
Standing at over 68cm tall with 15 bays, tis quite a beast. has 2 large fans at the rear at the top that have some serious airflow!!! :)
I also got some mountings for the hard disks from the same people that let you put 3 X 1" drives in 2 X 5 1/4" bays that also come with cooling...
http://www.pcicase.co.uk/pccases.ihtml?pid=126&step=4

This case new is about £300 from what i remember (+ drive mounting +VAT + delivery). oh, and delivery aint too cheap as it weighs quite a bit!

I managed to get hold of a "damaged" one that got sent back to a friendly supplier of mine (at Insight) that had a scratch on it and a couple of missing screws for £70. :> VBG

I've mounted about 10 drives in mine so far totaling about 800Gb.

Another site to try is www.servercase.com I was looking at a CK1100 from them (advanced cases) but had trouble even getting hold of them let alone ordering from them. Look like some good cases though.

Hope this is of help.

Any questions, please feel free.

this may not apply to you.

pet hate #23454 people who have 1person in the house that watches divx's but still feels the need to loose frames by using a divx server and slowing down a network.

i know 2people that do this, both should be shot.

"slow down" the network?
Isn't that rather hard to achieve on a switch?

Was there any need to post such big pictures of your computer?

800*600 would have done the job fine without screwing over the forum....

Yeah, apologies about the big pix. I didn't realise quite how big they were until i saw them on here myself and had to nip off urgently.

Can somebody please explain what biggles means:

"1person in the house that watches divx's but still feels the need to loose frames by using a divx server and slowing down a network"

spose you may have probelms if you're running at 10Mbps! :)

well ignore the network bit but i still h8 peeps that store mp3's and divx's remotely when they may as well put their drives into their comp. since they are the only person with any interest in them.

(i know 2 people that do this)

ps. i have a 3com 10/100 8port full duplex switch

Believe it or not, when i'm actually watching divx's i do actually watch them straight off of my server!!! :o well, there's no point in having 2 machines on! :) My bro does watch them over the network, but hang on, isn't that the point of having a network?

Also, my normal PC case couldn't house the current 9 hard disks + CD that are in there at the moment. And when using my normal PC i don't particularly want the noise of 9 HDDs and 10 fans droning on in the background.

PS: opposed to those half duplex switches! :) (sorry, couldn't resist!!!)

I keep all my DivX and MP3 on my server. In fact, anything that is just being stored (rather than applications and the like) sits on my server. For starters I run an XStream server on all my Divx/music videos which I can then play on my (or mancs) xbox to any TV in the house. You really shouldn't be dropping frames on a 100mbps connection, unless you're trying to play VOBs or summat ;p
