HD Manufacturers

Post by BoredAtWork »

Hey guys,
Out of following is there a manufacturer you would recommend or one you'd warn me off of;

Maxtor
Hitachi
Samsung
Seagate
Western Digital

I'm looking to get a SATA drive.

Cheers

I agree.

Be careful with Maxtor's warranty period - they say 5 years for some drives, 3 years for others, and hide 1 year warranties about. The retailers are confused and often get it wrong, so read the blurb on Maxtor's site to check the warranty period for your proposed drive.

WD's range is all 3 year warranty I think - so I recommend those above Maxtors atm.

Wouldn't touch maxtor drives atm, too many failures in the last 12 months to make it just a coincidence. Western Digi all the way IMO.

Until they stop working after 4 months ;)

Tbh, they've probably fixed the reliability issues by now, but for a good year or so there was a very high failure rate. Not quite on the IBM Deathstar scale but not far off (i've still got a working deathstar -wooo).

All my deskstars still work. I've never owned a Maxtor, but I work for a company which sells thousands of them, and the amount sent back to the RMA department is crazy.
