ADSL routers - Discuss

Post by PeteTheHair »

Erm, yeah. I need a DSL router. Looking at the Netgear one with 802.11g wireless.

What's everyone else got? Are they any good? Comments/suggestions?

I'd have said buy Netgear stuff, but I recently bought a WGT624 (Wireless Router without an adsl modem) and had to send it back cause it was f00ked. One faulty item wouldn't normally put me off, but after reading around it seems to be a common fault on that product line (randomly reboots every 20-30 mins). Fortunately the replacement I got has worked flawlessly, so I guess I was just unlucky. Whether the ADSL version has the same problems I couldn't say.

Don't get a USB one for the simple reason of setting up a decent home network without need a 'host' pc to be always on. Get an Ethernet one...

Avoid netgear wireless, I've had nothing but problems with them.

I'm using a D-link G604T 802.11g ADSL router (with 4port ethernet hub). Works a charm. No annoying connection dropping like I've seen with every netgear wireless I've used.

I have an 18" Masonery Bit. This allows wired to go to the same places as wireless, but it does leave a lot of dust behind...

I've been using NetGear's 54MBit AP, and it works fine. Seems to have quite a large range too (not that being able to get signal outside the house is a good thing).

Come to think of it Pete, FrF just bought his parents a 3Com all-in-one magic box - swtich, G wireless, ADSL router, etc. Only about £70 with a free PCMCIA wireless card. Drop him a line and ask him whether it's any good.
