Yeah did u get that info from? I would like you read a artical on the xbox performance over Christmas. http://www.megagames.com/news/html/cons ... ures.shtml

The main points that stand out for me is that xbox outsold the gamecube by 100% during december in the UK. The other one being that in the UK, France and Germany alone the total the xbox has passed the million console mark.

Xbox has passed the million-console mark in the United Kingdom, France and Germany.

Great. PS2 sold 6+ million in this country alone. LOL. But, as I said, Xbox was about 80k units before Xmas, it's more now, obviously. If you add up THREE countries, they sold a million units. Still pathetic.

Um the PS2 has been out nearly a year and a half longer than xbox so of course it's sold more.

Xbox is better.
Ps2 has better games.

It's just like the PC marker - I HAVE A NEW GEFORCE MX ITS GOT ALL THESE NEW FEATURES.... that won't appear in games for 18 months. Big deal.

Unfortunately saying 'Xbox is selling better than the PS2 did when it came out' (if it is? I have no idea) doesn't mean any more games written for it.

Sorry I don't agree with that statement tbh, there is more games on xbox and Dreamcast that I would want and like. They is only a few games on PS2 I like and even then I can wait for them to come out on other formats rather than buy a piece of shite that is the PS2.

If you haven't guessed already but I really hate the PS2.

Qualify that statement.

Xbox has... hmm, Halo. And what else? I believe Splinter Cell is all formats.

GameCube has Mario, Monkey Ball, Metroid.

PS2 has J+D, Gt3, Vice City.

I agree with your sentiments Dj, the PS2 is the only console that it makes any real commercial sense to develop for. It doesn't mean that the other consoles are going to die. For one, Microsoft was NEVER going to be competing with Sony in the market this time round, their objective was to get second place (which they have in Europe and (arguably) the US), and they were always going to lose a shitload of money in the process. The advantages of X Box over PS2 will start becoming more apparent when X Box Live becomes available to the public in March. PS2 online, not a chance. History has proved that 'expensive peripherals doth not a market make', and the PS2 broadband adapter is doomed to a small elite market. It's already game over this time round, next time you're going to see a much closer fight. Sony are already pushing PS3 well ahead of plans to stop Microsoft getting the jump on them with X Box 2.

PC gaming, yes, it's been on the way out for a long time now. 300quid (bloody us keyboards) for a top of the line graphics card every now and then just to keep playing games...no thanks. For the same money as keeping a game-worthy PC, you could *easily* keep a collection of all the current crop of consoles, with all the triple-A titles on each system. Once broadband console gaming is the norm, you're going to soo most PC developers moving to consoles. Peter Molyneux did it a long time ago (and OMG Fable and BC for xbox do look fantastic :).

Xbox also enjoyed a nearly 4.8 attach rate, the highest for any next-generation console after 14 months in the market. Moreover, Xbox sold the most software of any next-generation system after 14 months in the market.
That is taken from the artical I posted earlier. So yes it is doing better than the PS2 did when it came out.
DjArcas wrote:At Criterion we'll do ports for GC and XBox - that's cheap, you don't need a full contingent of artists and coders - it costs about a million quid a year to fund a full development team - think we're going to do that for a market of 80,000 units? I think not. PS2 has sold some stupid number in the UK, 6, 7 million units or something - why the HELL would ANYONE write for another console?
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't nearly every developer making games for the xbox?

That TOTALLY depends on how you read it. The xbox didn't sell more than anything else, 14 months after it came out. I think it's trying to say it sold more than GC/PS2 after their 14 months. Still doesn't change anything.

Consider yourself corrected. Some, most perhaps developers are PORTING games. But ported games do not sell console games, and are rarely any better.[/quote]

Splinter Cell is definitely multi-platform now, Ubi Soft announced a few weeks back. Should be interesting to see how the developers get the PS2 to manage that lighting, cos it is an integral part of the game mechanic. I think there'll be alot of late nights for some poor bastards assembler programmers =/ The X Box only manages to push it all around at 30fps.

Now some fucker has left the cyber cafe door open, which neccessitates a 5 minute walk to any one of 5 or more starbucks within 2 blocks.. :)

Yes I know it is coming out on PS2, just saying I think it will be a really bad conversion.

Against all better judgement, I'm injecting a small modicum of sanity into the thread.

Um, that's one console per 10 inhabitants of the entire country.
That's eeeever so slightly unlikely. Where are you getting your stats from? Pete's Dodgy Stats Generator (TM)?

ooohhh....people don't like me do they
when gamecube first cam out it was on sale for £130,
then the x-box and ps2 sales suddenly dropped substantialy, so they both had to lower the price of the console.
also i wonder if all 3 consoles were released at the same time would the ps2 have sold 6+ million?
