eMule

Post by Kulgan »

We'll be recommending use of eMule for (legal) filesharing at SG16, and will be providing an eMule server for you all to use. It's much better than straight Windows filesharing, allowing you to limit upload speeds (thank goodness) and other flashy stuff.
For more info on eMule, hit http://www.emule-project.net/

We've decided on eMule over eDonkey as during extensive testing (between lazymanc and me) they couldn't download from each other. Lazy prefers eMule (as do most eDonkey/eMule users) and DjArcas reckons eMule is "just app round brilliant" too.

It goes without saying that all the client files you could ever want will be available from our Intranet web server (http://www.shotgun.lan while at the event), so you'll be fine just downloading it from there once you arrive.

In the runup to the event, please try to break the eMule server I've set up at arbalest.dyndns.org:4661. During the event, this server will be available at emule.shotgun.lan:4661

eMule has lots of different mods that add a few extra features / information / better interface etc... The best modded client IMO can be found at http://www.emuleplus.tk/ (it's eMule + spinky bits)

To be honest....you can.

File-sharing on LAN is inherently peer-to-peer, hence client/server FTP will never be an ideal solution.

Searching functionality in eMule and the like will be v useful too.

Theres also a feature that lets you list all the files a user has shared, although i've never tried it as its a bit pointless in a non-lan situation, but some people might miss the whole nosing around peoples shares to find a gem.

AH, that brings back memories.... but no

Its a piece of software for filesharing. Users run the software, choose the files they want to share, and then connect to a central hub.

It supports file searching... I suspect it is the same as eDonkey

DirectConnect != eDonkey

DirectConnect < eDonkey while we're at it :)

You don't half like using mathematical symbols!

SO, Direct Connect is less than eDonkey.... riiight

But if the majority uses eDonkey, then I suppose we've gotta use that

eMule is our chosen file-sharing method for this event, so you're gonna want to use it. It's fairly easy to use, searchable, and...well...it works :)
