Those who know me well may find this a little... expected, as such, but...garlando wrote:...because Windows is not nessisarily the quickest or best OS out there but it is the EASIEST to use, you dont need to learn anything to use it.
1) Put in OS CD
2) Plug in joysick, game pad etc
3) Insert game CD
4) Play
Should I have to learn how it works to use the damn thing???
This is exactly why windows is mainstream. It makes life easy for you. I don't want to have to recompile my OS kernel to get a goddamn sound driver loaded. I don't want to have to spend 3 hours hunting through Google to find out how to broadcast to a shoutcast server from XMMS (evening Nick ). I don't want to have to spend 2 hours cursing at my OS to put a standard wireless network card into AdHoc mode (evening Mark ).
There's an old joke about comparing Windows to a car, which you have to restart every 50 miles or something. At least I don't need to understand the intrinsic principles of the internal combustion engine to drive a car. This is the difference. This is why MS beat down most other packages. Their software is simply easier to use. There will always be a Linux/whatever contingent, in the same way that there are people who spend their spare time tuning engines and souping up car stereos. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but most people just want to buy a car and be able to drive it away, regardless of the roads they happen to be running on. Linux doesn't do that (yet), so I'll continue to more than happy using Windows.
