4) Play
Those who know me well may find this a little... expected, as such, but...

Should I have to learn how it works to use the damn thing???

This is exactly why windows is mainstream. It makes life easy for you. I don't want to have to recompile my OS kernel to get a goddamn sound driver loaded. I don't want to have to spend 3 hours hunting through Google to find out how to broadcast to a shoutcast server from XMMS (evening Nick ;) ). I don't want to have to spend 2 hours cursing at my OS to put a standard wireless network card into AdHoc mode (evening Mark ;) ).

There's an old joke about comparing Windows to a car, which you have to restart every 50 miles or something. At least I don't need to understand the intrinsic principles of the internal combustion engine to drive a car. This is the difference. This is why MS beat down most other packages. Their software is simply easier to use. There will always be a Linux/whatever contingent, in the same way that there are people who spend their spare time tuning engines and souping up car stereos. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but most people just want to buy a car and be able to drive it away, regardless of the roads they happen to be running on. Linux doesn't do that (yet), so I'll continue to more than happy using Windows.

That wasn't my point - my point is that you have to have buy Windows in order to use IE. Not the other way around.

As I said before - I have no objection to Microsoft making good products. I do however still object to their business practices.
And to put things in perspective, my OS is Windows 2000. That's on my main, everyday machine. However - my server is 100% Linux, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Why? Because I like Linux for servers. But Windows is still the best general use OS, and I don't think anyone's trying to say otherwise...

Big deal. It took me 6 weeks to get my ISDN router working under Linux. Eventually I said 'fuck this', then got it going under Windows, with ICS. Including reboot time, took me 10 mins. Appreciate Windows for what it is, don't diss it for what it's not.

you may be having these problems now and in the past, and i admit, linux is not, on the whole a top notch operating system all around. But it is getting there. I am running suse 8.2pro on my laptop at the moment. It is really easy to install stuff.. Just click the name of the programme you want to install, insert the CD, wait and it is done. or if you download it, click on the RPM, wait, and its done...

wifi was easy to setup on my lappy, as was routing between wifi and my proper lan.

Linux might not be as good a windows for ease of use, but it is definately getting there.

how about laying the tables out in a way other than in rows, so that you create more socialising? say lay the tables out in a BIIG square or something I dunno. and how about a nice area under the projector or something, with sofa and many bean bag things.

just an idea.

Free milkshake would be super cool ;) but I don't think you'll go ahead with that idea.
We've got lots and lots more hubs and nice long cables and adaptors, so we'll be able to spread out a bit more for projectorgames - I thoroughly agree that we should try and get some sort of lounging around area there :)

It all depends on what furniture is stacked up waiting for car-boot salage really :)

We're usually good for at least one 3-piece suite though.
