Japanese animation - anime - is supposedly a distinct type of animation compared with cartoons - stuff like Akira (for all you suckers out there who don't know decent anime) etc doesn't really qualify as a "cartoon" in most senses of the word.
The word "cartoon" is most commonly used to refer to animation that's oriented towards children in the western world, and thus most westerners get confused by the line between "anime" and "cartoons".

In the case of Pokemon, both are appropriate, "cartoon" because the series is clearly targetted at children and was released in the western world for the express purpose of shamelessly exploiting parents (via children), yet also " anime" as the series is japanese animation.

So yeah, you're all right in the case of Pokemon.

I'm not talking about the dictionary definition - I'm talking about the general use of the word "cartoon". However you argue it, it is an indisputable fact that the vast majority of western people identify the word "cartoon" with children's animation, and not animation in general.
