Have you tried super dvd ripper, everyone is using it in house and it is working apparently, I will install it soon, an sed it to you if it works.

in fabian'f defence he did say, that he's been searchin the net for them. And there are tonnes out there which are a pile of poo so asking for recomendations is a good idea.

I think you missed the point of my post entirely.

Look again at this thread, and my post.

I'm sure someone will give you a lollipop if you can work it out in less than 30 minutes.

on the topic of super dvd ripper,

does anyone know why it would complain that my 70gb (35gb free) drive only has 2gb free and that it isnt enough for a 3gb file???? any ideas?

You're still missing the point. Look at the thread title :P

Uatec : sounds like it's just naff and old and doesn't support whatever filesystem you're using properly.

I always liked Smartripper for ripping VOBs, very easy to setup (3 clicks), and it's fast.

FlaskMPG or VirtualDub for the encodifying.

How do you identify the relevant OVB file? Say you want a part of a DVD, not the main film for instance? How do you identify them... :?:

/me eyes new DVD ROM...

I'm now using Gordian Knot for my ripping. All the files and guides are up on www.doom9.org

Take the time to figure out how it works, now I've got the hang of it I'm making perfectly sized rips every time :) Working on Twin Peaks Series one and Series 1-3 of the Sopranos :)

Oh, and finding the right parts to rip I find is just a case of picking the right length VOBs, Gordian Knot (DVD Decrypter) gives you a good guide.
