Never watched/read any Harry Potter related gubbins. Not because I have any great dislike of it, I just haven't got round to it.
The His Dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman is class tho, I've read the first two (Northern Lights then The Subtle Knife) must remember to grab a copy of The Amber Spyglass sometime.
Well worth a read :

The books are a bit hackneyed using the same twist repeatedly - the identity of the mystery person (Snape/Lockhart/Pettigrew/Moody). That said, they are enjoyable in the same way Enid Blighton's stuff was when I was a kid (perhaps I should have put Richmal Crompton for more street cred).
The first film was very close to the book (apart from the drinking potions part) and is terrific entertainment. Special effects, scenery and surround sound all do their bit.
In conclusion, Harry rocks...

Hmm, I actually preferred the Subtle Knife to Northern Lights. Sure, not so much happened, but the theme was a lot more mature (dark matter, multiple dimensions etc..)
One thing that surprised me was how violent the books are, I though they were kids books! The fight between the bears is just sick!
