NAS HELP!

Post by kipper »

right i bought a Intel 60GB InBusiness Network Server off ebay a month or so ago and was kinda wondering if i could get a bit of help upgrading the 2 30gig drives, its not the physical upgrade im worried about more the non windows partitions and the software needed to create them - the info is as follows :

Intel® InBusiness™ Storage Station (60GB) Dual-Drive SHD110TX60US

File and File System Limits

The OS supplies a SMB file system based on freeBSD*

The limits of the Storage Stations file systems are as follows:

File size limit 2 Gigabytes
Files per directory 2.94 Million (bounded by max # of inodes)
Directory limits 2.94 Million (bounded by max # of inodes)

Storage Station OS update requires minimum of 50 Meg freespace on the volume.

Dunno if this'd work, but get yourself a copy of norton ghost.

You should be able to a bit-by-bit disk-to-disk copy of the drive, thus keeping any partition table and all OS's.

Obviously if the new drive is bigger, you'd need to resise partitions later to fully utilise the whole drive.

If it's NAS and has it's own OS then surely the device itself will handle partitioning?

unfortunately the os is on the drives so getting the os to partition a new drive may be a tad impossible which disc i dont know and they can be a bit of a pig to upgrade from what i have read although someone did manage to get a 120gig drive in the single disc version

Still, I'm not sure how yo uthink you can use a Windows format utility to format a drive that exists on another physical machine and OS.

the reason i was asking for info on the software (free bsd) was so i could load up the OS on an old comp an format the drive there or copy the partition off the old drive and re insert the new drive with all data back into the nas box

I know what a NAS device is, but it's still a computer in it's own right. Whether you can format the drives in windows and plug them back in to the device, who knows, give it a try :)

When you can pick up a 250gb USB2 drive for a shade over £100 these days btw ;)
