Windows XP on LAN does not connect to the internet

Post by fah_metal »

HI,

SPECS MENTIONED BELOW

I am unable to connect to the internet using windows xp. It was working fine all this time but suddenly(2 days back) it stopped connecting to the internet.
I am able to connect to the internet using Fedora Core 4 so i know there is no problem with the computers hardware or my ISP.

I am unable to ping my gateway (request timed out) and any website that i try to connect gives me the following error msg(in opera) "could not locate remote server."

Ive tried to uninstall and reinstall the ethernet card but everytime i do it XP recognises it as another adapter giving it a new name (Local area connecton #2, #3, #4 and so on) but does not connect to the internet.

What is wrong? Could it be my Qos Packet sheduler or my Winsock??

Please help me.

QoS just steals bandwith, so delete it.

I would check your Firewall settings - once you have a new connection (Local area connecton #2, #3, #4etc) they may well be blocked.

Check that your modem is working - the connection lights.

Check for loose cabling.

Check that you login & password haven't been bugered up - assuming your modem or router stores them.

HI,

Thanks for replying.

I dont think it is the firewall as it would not connect to the internet with the firewall(windows firewall) off.

My modem and all other hardware are working.. i am able to connect to the internet on my fedora core 4 but not in my XP

I dont have a login and password.. if the connection is established im always online without dialing.

All connections have logins and passwords, even if it is just a verification of your MAC address should you be using a cable modem. Who is your ISP?

Windows XP on LAN does not connect to the internet

Hi Mike,

My ISP is Airtel Broadband India Ltd. Im on an ADSL connection, i have no idea where to look for my username and password when i double click the dialup icon i get only enable/disable, i searched for my password/uname in properties but was not able to find it.

I think my internet stuff(winsock,qos..etc) is to blame.
I tried reinstalling winsock ( http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html)and tcpip but still the problem remains.

Ive put up this problem in another forum as well... they had also given me various suggestions.. If you would like to see them go here

Please let me know if you think of something..

Thanks,
Faheem.

Horray!!!!! I can connect to the internet!!!!!!!!!!

I guess the problem was with my ethernet driver

Previous Driver:-
AMDTEK AN983 based ethernet adapter
Current Driver:-
AMDTEK AN983B XP DRV 219

After installing the new driver i restarted the system connect the cable and turned on the router.
Then went to my connection properties and gae in my ip, dsn...etc

Then tried connecting to google and lo belold.... i was able to see the webpage.

Thank you for all the help and support that was provided.

Faheem.
